The airline is the flag carrier of Sri Lanka and was established in 1979. It was previously known as Air Sri Lanka, which was launched after the original Sri Lankan flag carrier Air Ceylon was terminated.
The primary operational hub of the airline is the Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo. The airline flies to 112 destinations across 58 countries. In 1998, the airline signed a ten-year agreement with Emirates and was rebranded to its current name from the previous name Air Sri Lanka.
In 2008 Emirates sold its share in the airline to the Government of Sri Lanka. The airline aims to promote Colombo as the hub for flights to Asia. The airline follows a Piece policy or a Weight policy depending on the destination. For destinations excluded from North, Central and South America the Economy Class checked-in baggage allowance is 30 kg and for Business Class it is 40 kg.
For destinations in North, Central and South America the Economy Class checked-in baggage allowance is 2 pieces of 23 kg each and for Business Class it is 2 pieces of 32 kg each. Economy Class and Business Class passengers can carry a handbag of 7 kg.
